The Sun is Setting on “Plain Old Telephone Services” and 2G Cellular Service

Sonitrol Pacific Security Resources

As you are probably aware, the telecommunications industry is undergoing a substantial transition in both structure and technology. In doing so, providers can increase the data capacity on their networks. Therefore the “plain old telephone line” that we’re accustomed to no longer truly exists. This may eventually cause troubles with your alarm communication as protocols for new communication technology differ from older technology.

In addition, cellular companies are discontinuing their 2G networks as they migrate to current generation products. Companies will shut down the 2G network and use that space for 3G and 4G networks that will increase data capacity and speed. Therefore, when the 2G network shutdown occurs in your area, these systems will no longer be able to communicate alarm signals.

There have been many different dates given for the discontinuation of this service but we are beginning to see a sharper decline in the availability of 2G service. This shutdown will not occur all at once and it will appear sporadically across the country.

We have also seen some recent challenges in this area with several of our customers and are working with both the telecommunications providers and these customers directly to determine the best solution for their specific situation. We make every effort to be as proactive as possible as it is our desire to provide you uninterrupted service. Please understand though that your system is dependent upon the communication path provided by your telecommunications provider.  We do have alternative communication path options that we would be happy to discuss with you.

Our plan is to make this transition as smooth as possible for you. Please contact your local office if you are making any changes to your telecommunication system; be it a change in provider, an upgraded modem, a change in technology or any other change. We appreciate your business!
