Smoke detectors are the first line of defense in the event of a fire. When working properly, smoke alarms are very effective at alerting occupants that a fire is present and allowing enough time for escape. Since the introduction of the smoke detector to the U.S. markets in 1951, home fire deaths have dropped significantly. Unfortunately, there are still an average of 3,586 deaths caused by fire each year. In this blog we’ll cover some of the shocking statistics about smoke detectors and provide a few important smoke detector safety facts that will help keep you and your family safe.
According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately 96% of U.S. homes have at least 1 smoke alarm. That begs the question, “If smoke alarms are so effective and 96% of homes have them, why are there still so many fire deaths?” The answer is simple; smoke detectors are only effective when properly maintained and connected.
Smoke detectors should be regularly cleaning and maintained per the manufacturer instructions whether battery operated, hard wired, or part of a home monitoring system. Smoke detector batteries should be replaced yearly and some models should be completely replaced every 10 years. Remember to test the device monthly by pushing the test button and if you disconnect an alarm for any reason, for example a false alarm from cooking smoke, reconnect it as soon as the smoke has dissipated.
