Thurston County Sheriff Dan Kimball just released an alert regarding a rash of recent residential burglaries in which intruders got inside homes through the garage.

Whenever I read lists of tips to improve home security, I’m shocked by how few address how vulnerable garages are.

To reduce your risk of a burglary through your garage:
1. Keep your garage door closed and locked, even when you are home.
2. Keep the door between your garage and your home locked, even when you are home.
3. When you will be away overnight, unplugged or disconnect your automatic garage door opener and lock the garage door.
4. Never leave a garage door opener in a car parked outside the garage, in the driveway or on the street.
