The 2009 National Night Out is August 4, just a few weeks away. This annual event presents neighborhoods and communities a fantastic opportunity to come together and focus on crime and drug prevention measures.

Neighbors, law enforcement officials, community organizations and business associations all come together to celebrate and educate. According to the National Night Out website, the event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

A few of the different activities communities sponsor include:
* block parties
* BBQs
* local police and sheriff agencies
* parades
* flashlight walks
* contests and games
* youth programs

Check with your local neighborhood association or law enforcement agency to learn the National Night Out plan in your community.
