Apprehensions Increase 32% in 2008

By Pamela Singleton, Sonitrol Pacific Director of Communications
Posted January 5, 2009

Because our security is so effective and our team of experts are so awesome, I’m used to frequent apprehensions of suspects engaged in criminal activity on or around our clients’ facilities. However, 2008 has been a particularly busy year.

In all, 177 suspected criminals were arrested from 90 Sonitrol Pacific protected locations. Of these, 24 percent were detected and arrested BEFORE they could even get inside. An additional 16 percent of the suspects broke into the building through a point of entry that traditional burglar alarms wouldn’t have detected, like a wall or the roof. Our consultants design systems with the goal of catching criminals, and it shows in our apprehension record.

This major jump in criminal activity is very concerning to me. Considering these 177 people were arrested at a facility with a security system, what kind of risk are those without a system taking on for their business?

I think it also emphasizes the need to give attention to general perimeter security. Obviously, my advice is to work with one of our experts in order to ensure your facility is as secure as it can be. However, you can start today to decrease your odds of being broken into. Check out our security tips, talk to your local police department for more advice, and communicate with your neighboring businesses about collectively working to deter criminal activity.

Police Trust Sonitrol Pacific

By Pamela Singleton, Sonitrol Pacific Director of Communications
Posted December 31, 2008

Sonitrol Pacific values our relationship with law enforcement agencies across the Pacific Northwest. They respond quickly when we call with an alarm at one of our protected sites, resulting in frequent arrests of suspected criminals.

I know the police trust calls from Sonitrol Pacific, but this morning I got a reminder of just how much. On December 18, despite the agency being stretched due to the snow event, 14 police officers and two police dogs responded to a verified alarm at Diversified Recycling. Two suspects were arrested. Similarly, on December 22, as more snow fell, 12 officers and two police dogs responded to a verified alarm at Check Masters and two suspects were taken into custody before they could get inside.

In 2008, Sonitrol Pacific celebrated our 30th anniversary AND our 5000th apprehension. As this monumental year comes to a close, I want to send a special “thank you” to all the agencies who know our alarms are verified and not a waste of their resources, and respond with speed and force to protect our clients.

Burglars Not Deterred by Winter Storms

By Pamela Singleton, Sonitrol Pacific Director of Communications
Posted December 24, 2008

Despite the recent serious of winter storms that have blanketed the Pacific Northwest with an unusually high accumulation of snow, our Operations Center is jumping with activations and leading to the apprehensions of burglary suspects.

Yesterday alone, three burglary suspects were arrested in two separate events. Unfortunately, many criminals take advantage of people away from the office for the holidays or due to poor road conditions to break in. Fortunately for Sonitrol Pacific clients, our amazing operators and technicians are always on duty, making sure systems are working perfectly and detecting suspicious activity.

Our ability to verify through audio sensors lets clients stay at home when their system is activated, rather than calling around to check if anyone knows what’s going on. Sonitrol Pacific operators are experts with sound analysis and can determine the nature of the activation based on what our live audio sensors capture.

Verified Alarms Trump Enhanced Call

By Pamela Singleton, Sonitrol Pacific Director of Communications
Posted December 19, 2008

As of January 2009, the Seattle Police Department will become one of the first major city departments to employ an Enhanced Call Verification policy requiring burglar alarm companies to make two calls to a customer before calling the police in an attempt to reduce the high volume of false alarms they receive from traditional burglar alarm companies.

Since Sonitrol Pacific has been committed to verifying every system activation through either audio or video technology since we started business in 1978, this policy doesn’t impact our clients. Verification trumps calling the customer to ask them if there’s a problem.

Our early and verified detection allows our clients to enjoy an average police response time of seven minutes nationally. Faster response means more criminals caught. Sonitrol Pacific has helped law enforcement catch more than 5,000 suspected criminals.

For more information on two-call policies, read the Security Sales & Integration article.
